A surgical scrub brush does two jobs at once: the bristles lift debris from the nail bed and knuckles, the sponge delivers the antiseptic. Rich Medical moulds the same 8×5×2.1 cm dual-sided brush in three versions — dry, 4% chlorhexidine and 7.5%/10% povidone-iodine — so a theatre can standardise on one shape and vary only the chemistry.
Three chemistries, one shape
The dry brush carries no antiseptic: it is used with the hospital's own scrub solution, which is the norm where a single antiseptic policy is set centrally. The 4% chlorhexidine version holds 20 ml of CHG in the sponge, giving a measured dose per scrub. The povidone-iodine version is supplied at 7.5%/10% with the same 20 ml reservoir. Because the mould is identical, the scrub technique and the hand feel do not change when a department switches antiseptic.
Why the bristle side is on the back
Nail beds and the interdigital spaces need abrasion; the palm and forearm need contact time. Putting the bristles on one face and the sponge on the other lets the surgeon scrub the nails, then turn the brush and paint the arm without picking up a second item. The 2.1 cm thickness is what allows the sponge to hold 20 ml without the brush becoming a sponge on a stick.
Bristle stiffness and the complaint that follows
A brush that is too stiff damages skin and increases the bacterial count it is meant to reduce; too soft and it does not clean the nail bed. We hold the bristle specification against the approved sample and check tuft retention by pulling a sample of tufts per batch — a tuft that comes away in a wound is the defect that ends a supply contract.
Packing and carton counts
The dry brush packs 250 per carton at 480×380×330 mm; both impregnated versions pack 300 per carton at 580×375×400 mm because the sponge adds volume. Each brush is individually wrapped so it can be dropped onto the scrub sink without handling the bristles, and the wrapper carries the antiseptic name and strength.
Sterilisation and shelf life
Brushes are EO sterilised and individually wrapped; the carton carries the load batch and the expiry. Because the antiseptic is in the sponge, shelf life is set by the chemistry rather than by the plastic — tell us the shelf life your tender requires and we will confirm against the formulation before quoting.
