Buying guide

A wrapped cotton dressing is a cotton wool core inside a gauze or non-woven sleeve, wound into a roll. The sleeve is what touches the wound, so the choice between gauze and non-woven decides how the dressing behaves: gauze breathes and can be opened flat, non-woven stays intact when wet and sheds no loose fibre. Both are made here, from the cotton core outwards.

Gauze sleeve or non-woven sleeve

A gauze sleeve is an open-weave cotton fabric. It conforms to a joint, lets air through and can be unwrapped in one piece if a clinician needs to inspect the wound underneath. Its weakness is loose fibre at a cut edge, which is why a sewn or folded edge matters more than the gauze itself. A non-woven sleeve is a spun-bonded fabric: the fibres are continuous, so a cut edge does not fray, and the sheet stays together when it takes fluid. It is the better choice for a dressing that will be opened, used and discarded in one procedure, and the cheaper one per metre at most widths.

Why it ships as a roll

Wrapped dressings are cut at the point of use — a dressing trolley cuts what the wound needs, a kit builder cuts a fixed length, a converter cuts pads. Supplying a roll keeps the sterile field small and the waste low; the trade-off is that someone downstream has to cut it. If you want pre-cut pads or folded pieces instead, that is a converting step: tell us the finished size and we will quote the cut piece rather than the roll, because the packing and the carton change completely.

What to agree before the first order

Four things decide the price and the complaints: sleeve material and weight per square metre, whether the long edge is sewn, heat-sealed or merely folded, the width of the roll and the length wound on it, and whether the finished roll is sterile. Sterility means EO and a pouch, which changes both the packing and the shelf life, so it is not a line item that can be added after the artwork. Send a sample of what you use today and we will match it rather than describe it.
